The right birdseed for the right birds

Published

If a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, then how much are three birds at a feeder worth? But really, can you put a price tag on the joy of seeing color flit and fly just outside of your window?

At Keim, we know that kind of joy. It's taste of corn on the cob. It’s the feeling of green grass under your feet. It’s the sight of your favorite bird to your feeder. Because sometimes, it’s the simple things in life.

Here’s a plain and simple guide to the right birdseed for the right birds.

All the birds

If you want a solid choice that attracts all types of birds, go with the Black Oil Sunflower Seeds. This will bring cardinals, blue jays, finches, robins… you name it, it will come!

Cardinals and Chickadees

Try out the North Coast Cardinal Mix. Yes, it attracts Cardinals, but Chickadees like it, too.  It will make your feathered friends sing “birdie, birdie, birdie” all day long. (Get it?)

Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, and Orioles

Suet

These birds (and many more) love suet. The animal fat helps hold the birdseed together and give extra nutrients to the birds, especially in in the winter. If you want to get creative, turn a birdseed wreath into an Oriole’s delight: just place it flat on a plate and fill the center will jelly.

Hummingbirds

Hummers love all things red and sweet, so you can’t go wrong with this concentrated hummingbird formula. We really like the Perky-Pet Hummingbird Nectar concentrate.

Goldfinches and House finches

If you want a flash of color at your feeders, you can get that with a mesh bag filled with thistle. One benefit of using thistle, is that it won’t attract unwanted squirrels to your bird feeder. But if you choose to use sunflower-based bird feed, then try our squirrel-resistant cage feeder. It’s specially built so to keep the squirrels out.
